PROGRAM

Synopsis

Prologue
Long ago, in a not-so-distant kingdom, there lived a king, a queen, and their lovely daughter, Pirlipat. She was adored by all—save one: Madame Mouserinks, the Queen of the Mice. Long before, the royal family had angered her, and she vowed revenge.
When Pirlipat came of age, the Mouse Queen crept into the palace, her eyes glittering with fury. With a hiss and a flash of her tail, she cast a spell—turning the princess’s head into that of a wooden Nutcracker! Horrified, the courtiers turned away, leaving poor Pirlipat weeping.

Observing the desperation of the king and queen, Madame Drosselmeyer, a well respected artificer of clockworks and magic, approached the scene with a solution. “Only true love,” said she, “can break such a spell.” And as it happens, she knew of a lad with a heart of gold: her very own nephew.

Indeed, when said nephew saw Pirlipat, he felt pity instead of fear. Gently, with the purest heart, he offered her a token of his love: a single rose. Pirlpat eagerly accepted it, and at that moment her beauty returned! But alas— in the excitement, the young man accidently stepped on the tail of the Mouse Queen who shrieked and cursed him to wear the Nutcracker’s wooden face instead!

The nephew turned to Prilpat. Surely, she would return the favor of her love and break the curse as he had for her. But Pirlpat's heart was not so pure. Cruelly, she recoiled crying. “I cannot love a toy!” tossing the rose aside.

Heartbroken for her beloved Nephew's plight, Drosselmeyer drew upon her knowledge of tinkering and magic to cast a final spell that would shrink him down to the size of a common nutcracker, keeping him alive and young within the Nutcracker’s form—until someone pure of heart might one day love him as he was. And so the story was passed down through the ages, told each winter by those who still believed… and by one wise old woman who whispered, “Someday, my boy—someday, she’ll come.”

Act 1

Scene 1: Drosselmeyer's Estate

In the year 1816, seventeen-year-old Marie and her eighteen-year-old brother Fritz lazily await the arrival of guests at their godmother Drosselmeyer’s annual Christmas Eve party. Having attended so many of these gatherings over the years, Marie and Fritz have grown tired of the haughty guests. Their godmother Drosselmeyer and her sister Louise anxiously prepare for the festivities.

When the guests finally arrive, Drosselmeyer instructs Fritz to watch over a peculiar gift: a Nutcracker doll. Unimpressed, he tosses it across the room. Marie, disapproving of his behavior, scolds him for his rudeness and rushes to the doll’s aid. She searches for it but cannot find the Nutcracker anywhere. Distressed by the fear of disappointing her godmother, Marie continues searching the room until she abruptly collides with a man who looks strangely similar to the toy—one whom only she can see.

Intermission

Act 2

Scene 1: The Forest
As the Nutcracker enters the forest, he is captured by the Mouse Queen’s children and brought before the Mouse Queen herself. She casts a spell upon him, transforming him into her soldier. Soon after, Marie, who has followed him, is also taken by the mice. Drosselmeyer follows their trail, using magic to locate Marie. Upon finding them, she recognizes the Nutcracker but sees that he is under the Mouse Queen’s spell.

Scene 2: Drosselmeyer's Estate
Marie awakens alone on the ballroom couch, the night’s magic seemingly vanished. Left behind is a single rose, a quiet token from the Nutcracker. Holding it close, she vows her love to him, whatever form he may take. Moments later, Drosselmeyer enters, accompanied by a man she presents as her nephew.

But this is short-lived, as a terrible plague sweeps the land yet, Rick's determination does not leave him this time. Soon he is able to perform several different roles in Illume dance company's annual productions of Narnia. He also calls upon all of his charm and his remaining technique to Curry the favor of the magical and mysterious; Serena, matron of Serena Webb Dance Theatre.
